Helping Women Build Brighter Futures Through Agriculture
For many women living in rural communities, agriculture is more than a source of food. It is a livelihood, a way to support a family, a means of building independence, and an opportunity to create a better future. At Friends of Mothers Initiative, we believe that when women are given greater opportunities to participate meaningfully in agriculture and business, the impact extends far beyond the individual. It reaches families, communities, and future generations. This belief is at the heart of everything we do. Women at the Heart of Our Work Friends of Mothers Initiative works with women farmers in the Mount Elgon region of eastern Uganda, where coffee has been cultivated for generations. Today, all the farmers we work with are women, creating a model that places women at the centre of agricultural production and enterprise. Through coffee production, beekeeping, training, and entrepreneurship, women are able to create additional opportunities from the resources and skills they already possess. Our work is not simply about producing coffee and honey. It is about creating pathways for women to gain greater value from their hard work. When a woman has the opportunity to earn a sustainable income, she can contribute more strongly to her household, invest in her family’s future, support education, and participate more actively in decisions that affect her life and community. From the Farm to Greater Opportunity Coffee farming requires patience, dedication, and hard work. From preparing the land and caring for the coffee trees to harvesting and processing the cherries, every stage requires commitment. The same is true of beekeeping. By supporting women in these areas, Friends of Mothers Initiative helps create opportunities for women to participate in value chains that extend beyond primary production. Coffee is not simply grown and sold. It is carefully processed, milled, stored, and prepared for markets. Honey is carefully harvested and handled to preserve its natural character. Each step creates opportunities for greater value, and women should be able to benefit from that value. Building Skills and Confidence Economic empowerment is not only about income. It is also about knowledge, confidence, leadership, and the ability to make decisions. Through training and participation in agriculture and entrepreneurship, women gain skills that can strengthen their livelihoods and create new opportunities. They become more connected to markets, more informed about production practices, and better positioned to participate in decisions that affect their work. At Friends of Mothers Initiative, women are not viewed simply as beneficiaries. They are farmers, producers, entrepreneurs, leaders, and partners. A Future Built Together This distinction matters. Women hold 90% of leadership roles within the organization, reflecting our belief that women should be actively involved in shaping the institutions and businesses that affect their lives. Our goal is to continue creating an environment where women can grow, lead, and build sustainable livelihoods through agriculture and entrepreneurship. The journey is ongoing. Every harvest presents a new opportunity. Every partnership creates new possibilities. A New Chapter for Coffee: Strengthening Our Processing Journey
Coffee begins long before it reaches the cup. It begins with the soil, the coffee tree, the farmer, and the careful work that takes place throughout the growing season. But the journey does not end when the cherries are harvested. What happens after harvest plays an equally important role in determining the quality of the final coffee. For Friends of Mothers Initiative, the development of our coffee processing capacity represents an important step in strengthening that journey. From Harvest to Greater Control For many coffee producers, processing is a critical stage of the value chain. It is where careful decisions can protect quality, improve consistency, and help preserve the characteristics of the coffee’s origin. By strengthening our own processing operations, Friends of Mothers Initiative is able to take greater responsibility for the journey of coffee from the farm. Coffee cherries can be carefully received, sorted, processed, dried, milled, and prepared for the next stage of their journey. This greater control helps us maintain a closer connection between the farmer, the coffee, and the final product. Protecting the Character of Mount Elgon Coffee Our coffee is grown in the Mount Elgon region, where farms sit at elevations between 1,400 and 2,500 metres above sea level in rich volcanic soils. These conditions provide a strong foundation for specialty Arabica coffee. However, origin alone does not guarantee quality. Quality must be protected at every stage. From the careful selection of ripe cherries to sorting, fermentation, drying, milling, and storage, each stage contributes to the final result. Our processing operations are part of our commitment to ensuring that the work of our women farmers is matched by careful handling after harvest. Creating Greater Value The development of coffee processing capacity is also about creating greater value within the coffee chain. When more stages of the journey are managed closer to the source, there is greater opportunity to understand the product, strengthen quality control, improve traceability, and prepare coffee for different markets. For Friends of Mothers Initiative, this is particularly important as we continue connecting Mount Elgon coffee with buyers and partners around the world. The coffee we produce carries the story of its origin. Processing helps us protect that story. Looking Towards the Future The launch of our processing operations marks more than the development of a facility. It represents progress. It reflects the continued growth of Friends of Mothers Initiative as a women-led producer, processor, and exporter of specialty coffee and natural honey. It also reflects our long-term vision of building stronger rural enterprises that create opportunities for women and communities. From the farms of Kasaale to our processing and warehousing facilities, every stage of the journey brings us closer to the goal of producing quality coffee while creating meaningful opportunities for the people behind it. The journey continues. And with every harvest, every improvement, and every new partnership, we move closer to a future where more value is created, protected, and shared from the source.
