It can begin with a walk through the coffee farms, a conversation with a woman farmer, the sight of coffee cherries growing on the slopes of Mount Elgon, or the sound of bees moving through the natural landscape. This is the experience behind farm tourism. Experiencing the Journey Farm tourism offers visitors an opportunity to go beyond the finished product and experience the people, places, and practices behind it. At Friends of Mothers Initiative, visitors can discover the journey of coffee from the farm to the final product, learn about sustainable beekeeping, meet the women farmers behind the work, and experience the natural beauty of Mount Elgon. Coffee begins long before it reaches the cup. It begins with the soil, the coffee tree, the farmer, and the careful work that takes place throughout the growing season. But the journey does not end when the cherries are harvested. What happens after harvest plays an equally important role in determining the quality of the final coffee. For Friends of Mothers Initiative, the development of our coffee processing capacity represents an important step in strengthening that journey. From Harvest to Greater Control For many coffee producers, processing is a critical stage of the value chain. It is where careful decisions can protect quality, improve consistency, and help preserve the characteristics of the coffee’s origin. By strengthening our own processing operations, Friends of Mothers Initiative is able to take greater responsibility for the journey of coffee from the farm. Coffee cherries can be carefully received, sorted, processed, dried, milled, and prepared for the next stage of their journey. This greater control helps us maintain a closer connection between the farmer, the coffee, and the final product. Protecting the Character of Mount Elgon Coffee Our coffee is grown in the Mount Elgon region, where farms sit at elevations between 1,400 and 2,500 metres above sea level in rich volcanic soils. These conditions provide a strong foundation for specialty Arabica coffee. However, origin alone does not guarantee quality. Quality must be protected at every stage. From the careful selection of ripe cherries to sorting, fermentation, drying, milling, and storage, each stage contributes to the final result. Our processing operations are part of our commitment to ensuring that the work of our women farmers is matched by careful handling after harvest. Creating Greater Value The development of coffee processing capacity is also about creating greater value within the coffee chain. When more stages of the journey are managed closer to the source, there is greater opportunity to understand the product, strengthen quality control, improve traceability, and prepare coffee for different markets. For Friends of Mothers Initiative, this is particularly important as we continue connecting Mount Elgon coffee with buyers and partners around the world. The coffee we produce carries the story of its origin. Processing helps us protect that story. Helping Women Build Brighter Futures Through Agriculture
For many women living in rural communities, agriculture is more than a source of food. It is a livelihood, a way to support a family, a means of building independence, and an opportunity to create a better future. At Friends of Mothers Initiative, we believe that when women are given greater opportunities to participate meaningfully in agriculture and business, the impact extends far beyond the individual. It reaches families, communities, and future generations. This belief is at the heart of everything we do. Women at the Heart of Our Work Friends of Mothers Initiative works with women farmers in the Mount Elgon region of eastern Uganda, where coffee has been cultivated for generations. Today, all the farmers we work with are women, creating a model that places women at the centre of agricultural production and enterprise. Through coffee production, beekeeping, training, and entrepreneurship, women are able to create additional opportunities from the resources and skills they already possess. Our work is not simply about producing coffee and honey. It is about creating pathways for women to gain greater value from their hard work. When a woman has the opportunity to earn a sustainable income, she can contribute more strongly to her household, invest in her family’s future, support education, and participate more actively in decisions that affect her life and community. Every coffee-growing region has a story. For Friends of Mothers Initiative, our story begins in Kasaale, on the slopes of Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda, where women farmers grow Arabica coffee in rich volcanic soils at elevations between 1,400 and 2,500 metres above sea level. But for coffee to truly create greater opportunity for the people who produce it, its story must travel. That is why opportunities to connect with the wider international coffee community matter. Our journey to the International Coffee Organization in London represents an important step in sharing the story of Uganda’s coffee, our women farmers, and the work being done to build stronger coffee value chains. More Than a Cup of Coffee Coffee connects people across continents. A cup enjoyed in one part of the world can begin with a farmer working thousands of kilometres away. Between those two points is a complex journey involving farmers, processors, exporters, importers, roasters, retailers, and consumers. Taking our coffee to an international platform such as the International Coffee Organization creates an opportunity to participate in conversations that shape the future of coffee. It allows us to share our experience, learn from others, and build relationships with people who understand the importance of a stronger and more inclusive coffee sector. Sharing the Story of Women Farmers At the centre of our work are the women farmers who produce the coffee. Their work begins in the field, but their contribution extends far beyond the farm.
